Amsterdam to Basel Daily Itinerary

  • Climb aboard for our overnight flight to Amsterdam. Enjoy in-flight entertainment and meal service as we begin our vacation along the majestic Rhine River. Meals: In-Flight

  • Upon arriving in Amsterdam, we’ll meet our local guide and travel to Zaanse Schans, a recreated Dutch village with historic windmills and distinctive green wooden houses. Discover the Rijkmuseum showcasing over 800 years of Dutch history including artwork by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. In the late afternoon, we’ll board the MS Symphonie and enjoy a welcome cocktail as we get introduced to the crew and enjoy dinner on board. The MS Symphonie is an intimate-sized ship with a cheerful, lively atmosphere and offers a refined restaurant, large bay windows, a lounge/bar with dancefloor, and a spacious sun deck to admire the stunning Rhine River landscapes.

  • Today we’ll take a panoramic tour of Amsterdam, a city rich in history, art, and culture. Cruise the picturesque canals, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see the famous gabled houses, the city’s iconic bridges, and stately 17th century historic buildings. At your own pace, stroll through the beautiful Keukenhof Gardens, the most famous garden in Europe, with paths winding through fields of blooming tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and more. Tonight, enjoy an evening of dancing in the ship’s lounge as we make our way to Nijmegen. Meals: B, L, D

  • After breakfast onboard the ship, we’ll visit the Netherlands Open-Air Museum in Arnhem. This national museum focuses on the everyday life of Dutch people throughout the country’s history, including old homes, farms, and factories from different regions. Play with toys from the 1800s, sample the puffy mini-pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, or hike the park’s steps to get an aerial view of the museum. Enjoy a lovely dinner with an evening of entertainment on board. Meals: B, L, D

  • We’ll take a guided tour of Cologne, the crossroads of Europe since the Middle Ages. See the immense, Gothic cathedral with the tallest twin-spire church in the world and is the most visited landmark in Germany. This Gothic masterpiece took seven centuries to complete, and houses works of art including oak-carved choir stalls, hand-painted choir screens, and outstanding stained-glass windows. We’ll head to Old Town to stroll the streets and pass in front of the famous Farina Fragrance Museum. Meals: B, L, D

  • We’ll cruise though the magnificent Rhine Valley on our way to Mainz. Once there, we’ll take a walking tour of Mainz, known for its old town, with half-timbered houses and medieval market squares. We’ll stroll the picturesque streets to the Romanesque Mainz Cathedral, built of deep red sandstones. Tour the Gutenberg Museum honoring the inventor of the printing press with exhibits including two of his original bibles. Meals: B, L, D

  • Arriving in Strasbourg in the afternoon, we’ll take a boat tour of this striking city with its unique mix of architecture that includes a broad range of traditional structures next to bold, modern designs. Tonight, we’ll gather for a festive gala evening on board the ship with a delectable dinner and drinks. Meals: B, L, D

  • We’ll take a guided tour of Colmar, a colorful city bursting with charm. Spend time in the romantic Little Venice neighborhood with its labyrinth of cobbled lanes, flower-lined canals, and timber-framed houses painted in a rainbow of pastel hues. We’ll visit the Unterlinden Museum with exhibits spanning 7000 years from prehistoric times to modern art. The most regarded masterpiece in the museum is its collection of the polyptych by artists Niclaus of Haguenau and Grünewald. As we begin our cruise to Basel, enjoy dinner on the ship and an evening of entertainment. Meals: B, L, D

  • After disembarkation, we’ll enjoy a brief city tour of Basel by coach and visit the “die Markthalle”, Basel’s famous street food market. This is a foodie paradise with meats, bakery items, cheeses, and wines from around the world. Upon arrival in Lucerne, we’ll take a walking tour with a local guide to see the Lion’s Monument, the Medieval streets, the ornate patrician houses of the walled Old Town, and the famous wood-covered bridge of Lucerne. Spend the remainder of the evening on your own exploring this charming city surrounded by majestic mountains. Meals: B

  • Today we’ll discover why Lucerne is considered one of the most charming cities in the world as we start our day with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne with its sprawling crystalline blue water framed by looming peaks. Climb aboard the historic Rigi Bahnen, a cogwheel railway that will take us to the top of Mount Rigi. Relax in the beautifully restored carriages while enjoying the spectacular panoramic views of the snow-capped Alps, colorful wildflower meadows, and glimmering Lake Lucerne. After some free time at the top of Mount Rigi, we’ll descend via cogwheel train and cable car. Tonight, we’ll gather together for a farewell dinner at the famous Stadtkeller restaurant and enjoy a folklore show including Swiss music, yodeling, and dancing. Meals: B, D
